A gloss of the surface is the ratio of light reflected from the surface of the sample to the light incident on it, When the angle of incidence and reflectance are equal numerically but opposite in sign i.e. gloss is a measure of how well the surface function as a mirror.

How to measure gloss using portable gloss meter:

Gloss is measured by directing a constant intensity light beam, at a fixed angle, on to the test surface and then monitoring the amount of reflected light from the same angle. This specular reflectance is measured using a gloss meter.
